Helping pupils take ownership of their

targets

In outstanding lessons students make excellent progress and they take ownership

of this. To do so they need a simple way of recording and reflecting on their current

standard of work and of tracking their targets for improvement.

It is imperative that individuals know where they are with their work so that they

can go on to improve. For them to do so successfully, the following things need to

be in place:

• Regular, quality feedback from the teacher that includes praise and that

identifies clear strengths and targets for improvement

• Help in understanding their strengths and where they should be heading, so

that it is clear what they need to do to improve on their work

• Lesson time set aside to allow pupils the opportunity to reflect on and improve

their work (Many students won’t automatically do this without guidance and

allocated lesson time.)
